When to use 3ds Max + V-Ray and when to use AI? A straight, honest answer.
Use 3D rendering in 3ds Max and V-Ray when a project needs exact sizes, real materials and many matching views, such as architecture and product launches. Use AI images for fast mood boards, concepts and social content where small errors are fine. This free comparison covers control, accuracy, speed and cost.

| 3ds Max + V-Ray | AI (image / video) | |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Everything exact: size, material, light | Less control, the result changes a little every time |
| Accuracy | Based on real measurements and CAD | An approximation, measurements are not guaranteed |
| Speed | Takes more time (modeling + rendering) | Very fast, ideas in minutes |
| Changes | Change one thing and the rest stays the same | A small change can change the whole image |
| Best for | Client approval, construction, product detail | Mood boards, concepts, social media reels |
If you need to show a client the final, exact design, use 3D. If you want to show an idea fast or make a reel, use AI. Often the best result comes from using both: 3D for the base, AI for the mood.
In my own work I often use 3ds Max and V-Ray for the base, where the room, the sizes and the materials must be right. AI is useful for quick concepts, for social media versions, and for turning a still image into a short clip. Using both lets you get accuracy where it matters and speed where it does not.
AI is usually faster to start with, but it can take many tries to get a usable result. For exact designs, 3D is often the safer choice.
Not exactly. AI gives an approximation, so measurements are not guaranteed.
Yes. See interior rendering and AI product video.
