Failed Renders Museum

Common mistakes, why they happen and how to fix them. The fastest way to learn.

What is the Failed Renders Museum?

The Failed Renders Museum is a free visual guide to the most common 3D rendering mistakes, such as dark rooms, fake lighting, noise and wrong scale. Each case shows a before and after, why it happens and how to fix it. It helps beginners in 3ds Max, V-Ray or Corona learn faster from real errors.

Case 1

Dark room

Galat

Wrong (simulated)

Theek

Fixed

What went wrong: Only one window light and low exposure.

Fix: Window portal light + exposure +1.5 stop.

Case 2

Grainy render (noise)

Galat

Wrong (simulated)

Theek

Fixed

What went wrong: Low sampling and a glossy floor.

Fix: Noise threshold 0.01 + denoiser.

Case 3

Marble that looks like plastic

Galat

Wrong (simulated)

Theek

Fixed

What went wrong: Reflection too strong and no roughness map.

Fix: Fresnel on, glossiness map, IOR 1.5.

Case 4

Burned windows

Galat

Wrong (simulated)

Theek

Fixed

What went wrong: Sun multiplier too high and linear color mapping.

Fix: Reinhard burn 0.5 and a lower sun.

How to use this page

Each case shows one common render mistake: a “wrong” version, a “fixed” version, what went wrong and how to fix it. The examples are simulated on stock photos so the problem is easy to see. Find the case that looks most like your render, read the cause, and try the fix in 3ds Max and V-Ray.

  1. Compare your render with the “wrong” picture in each case.
  2. Read What went wrong to understand the cause.
  3. Apply the Fix in your scene and render a small test.
  4. If the problem is not listed here, open Render Doctor, which has more problems and step by step fixes.

Four habits that prevent most failed renders

  • Light the scene first. Set up sun, sky or window light before you spend time on materials.
  • Use real-world scale. Wrong scale breaks lighting, textures and depth of field.
  • Test small. Use region renders and low resolution while you test, and keep high settings for the final.
  • Change one thing at a time. Then you always know what fixed the problem.

Questions people ask

Are these my own renders?

No. They are simulated examples made on stock photos, so each mistake is clear to see.

Do the fixes work in other render engines?

The ideas do, but the setting names are written for V-Ray in 3ds Max.

What do terms like Fresnel and IOR mean?

See the 3D / AI Dictionary for short, simple explanations.
